Arrow Season 6: Whose Side is Vigilante Really On?
The writers of Arrow introduced the character the Vigilante last season, and at the time it felt a bit like a bait and switch specifically to mess with comic readers. For the Arrow fans that just watch the show and don't really follow the comics, the reveal that Prometheus was really Adrian Chase (Josh Segarra) was shocking, but not nearly as much as it was for the big-time fans of the comics. Because in the comics, Adrian Chase is the Vigilante. They introduced both halves of the character around the same time, gave us clues that seemed to point to Chase having a double life, and even had a fight between Vigilante and Prometheus… and then they removed Prometheus mask and the comic folks were stunned. And then the writers quietly put Vigilante over in the corner and told us, 'we'll get back to him next season', and focused on Prometheus.
As season six was approaching, the producers teased that Vigilante was someone we'd met. Someone with ties to a member of Team Arrow… and there were some awesome on-line theories including him being Roy Harper, Earth-2 Adrian Chase, Earth-2 Robert Queen, Earth-2 Oliver Queen, and even Frank Pike. A few rightly guessed that he was actually Vincent Sobel (Johann Urb), the presumed dead former partner of Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy). And when we do find out, we are then given another twist… he's working with Cayden James (Michael Emerson).
Then we spend about half of this season thinking that Vigilante is a bad guy, when suddenly he tells Mr. Terrific (Echo Kellum) that he's actually undercover and ends up helping the new Terrific/Wild Dog/Black Canary team twice, even shaving Wild Dog's (Rick Gonzalez) life. It looks like the next episode, All For Nothing, sees him playing both sides of the fence again.
But he's been good and bad and good so much that it's hard to really feel sure of which side he's on. James has been so good at predicting what Team Arrow will do that he may have had Vigilante pretend to be a double agent. Or he really good be one as that is what Vincent use to be, an undercover cop. And as we can see from the photos above, he meets with Oliver (Stephen Amell) and you know that is not going to be an instant trust fall moment. Oliver is going to question his motives and wonder about the other team for trusting him in the first place. I'm expecting an episode with a lot of angry stares from both Green Arrow and Vigilante.
As to whether we can trust Vigilante is on the good guy side again… he is a hero, albeit an anti-hero, in the comics so I'm going to go with yes, we can trust him. But I'm sure not going to put any money on it.
Arrow airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on the CW.
