Community: Joel McHale on William Shatner's One-Sided Beef With Him

On Craig Ferguson's podcast, Joel McHale (Community) discussed the beef that William Shatner had with him & how McHale still isn't sure why.

Article Summary

  • Joel McHale discusses William Shatner's mysterious beef with him & Norm Macdonald on Craig Ferguson's podcast.
  • McHale attempted to make peace with Shatner at Betty White's 90th birthday but was snubbed.
  • We also look back at Dan Harmon's Community: The Movie update from last month.
  • Harmon ensures the upcoming Community film will satisfy both new fans and long-time followers.

After a pretty brutal 2023 for the entertainment industry, we can't help but feel positive about what 2024 has in store for Peacock's upcoming Dan Harmon & Andrew Guest-written, Joel McHale (Jeff), Gillian Jacobs (Britta), Danny Pudi (Abed), Alison Brie (Annie), Ken Jeong (Ben Chang), Jim Rash (Craig Pelton), and Donald Glover (Troy Barnes)-starring (we're still keeping our Yvette Nicole Brown candle burning) Community: The Movie. While we wait for updates on how things are going with production, we had a chance to listen to what McHale & comedian/actor Craig Ferguson had to say on this week's episode of Ferguson's podcast, Joy. As great as the hour conversation is, it's the part where McHale addresses the still-unexplained animosity that Star Trek icon William Shatner used to have for him & SNL alum/comedy icon Norm Macdonald.

At around the 36:40 mark, McHale shares with Ferguson how there was a time when Shatner used to post about McHale & Macdonald and how "unfunny we were." Though he jokes about retweeting Shatner's posts with "big fan," McHale makes it clear that he doesn't understand where the animosity came from. After Ferguson asks the Community star if he ever met up with Shatner to smooth things over, McHale reveals how he saw Shatner at the party for the late Betty White's 90th birthday and even extended his hand to him. Yeah, it doesn't sound like it went well -with Shatner's response being to stare at McHale & his hand. Ouch. Here's the full episode that was released this week that's definitely worth a listen:

Community: Dan Harmon Talks Movie

Speaking with The Associated Press last month, Harmon offered a very promising update on how the script for the movie is looking now compared to where things stood ahead of the SAG-AFTRA & WGA strikes. "We had a draft of the script that was theoretically ready to go. I don't think creatively it was all the way there, which is why I was starting to panic about us being scheduled to start shooting, and then the strike happened," Harmon shared. And while there's not a whole lot of positives to be taken out of the strikes, Harmon revealed that the pause gave them a better sense of "clarity" on how to approach the story.

"I do think it was a huge blessing for this particular project because it shut everything down long enough for us to, when we got back to rewriting that script, which were almost through the process of now, we had such so much more clarity than if we had been taking that thing to the set and starting to shoot it," Harmon explained. "So, I'm really excited about it."

And for what Harmon was able to share about the script, fans have every reason to believe that the wait will be more than worth it. "We've come upon the right story in the right format of the movie, and it's going to be great. It's going to be something to be really proud of," Harmon shared. "And it's designed absolutely backward from the goal of letting everybody new and old fans just feel like things are complete unless they see the movie and want to reboot the series."
