Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker Confirms Series 12 Return Whenever Series 12 Returns
Jodie Whittaker's 13th Doctor will get to spend a little more time – at least one more season's worth – spinning around time and space, with the actress confirming her return for at least one more season/series in BBC's Doctor Who. The first female Doctor was expected by many to return for a new season, but the BBC hadn't officially confirmed Whittaker's return to the sci-fi classic – which keeps her from joining the "one-season wonder" club currently occupied by Christopher Eccleston's 9th Doctor.
Speaking exclusively with The Hollywood Reporter, Whittaker confirmed her return to the series:
"I really can't wait to step back in and get to work again. It's such an incredible role. It's been an extraordinary journey so far and I'm not quite ready to hand it over yet."
With Doctor Who wrapping up its Series 11 run on Sunday, the series was met with both widespread praise and ratings success upon Whittaker's debut. The opening episode of the first female Doctor's freshman series 'The Woman Who Fell to Earth' earned a consolidated rating of 10.9 million in the U.K: the largest season lauch for the show since "New Who" first premiered (in 2005, Eccleston's first episode 'Rose' reached 10.8 million viewers).
Doctor Who Series 11, Episode 10 'The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos': On the planet of Ranskoor Av Kolos lies the remains of a brutal battlefield. But as the Doctor, Graham, Yaz and Ryan answer nine separate distress calls, they discover the planet holds far more secrets. Who is the mysterious commander with no memory? What lies beyond the mists? Who or what are the Ux? The answers will lead the Doctor and her friends towards a deadly reckoning.
Starring Jodie Whittaker, Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole. Guest starring Phyllis Logan, Mark Addy and Percelle Ascott. Written by Chris Chibnall. Directed by Jamie Childs.
Fans of Doctor Who will get a New Year's Day special on Janaury 1, 2019; with production on Series 12 expected to start some time in early 2019…but will we see it in 2019? The series is a BBC Studios production for BBC One and a BBC America co-production.
