While most of the news surrounding the USA Network legal drama Suits has revolved around the departure of actress Meghan Markle to marry Britain's Prince Harry, the show is in the news today for a different reason. The planned spinoff led by longtime series regular Gina Torres has been given a series pickup by the network. The finale of season 7 will work as a backdoor pilot to a show featuring Jessica Pearson (Torres) learning the "dirty world of Chicago politics."

"It was an extraordinary pleasure working with Gina on Suits for six years. Beyond her undeniable talent, she is an incredible partner and collaborator, and I always hoped we would work together again," said Suits creator Aaron Korsh, "I am sincerely grateful to USA and [Universal Cable Productions] for giving Dan Arkin, my producing partners at Hypnotic and me the opportunity to continue Jessica Pearson's journey in this new series that will encapsulate all that our fans love about her and Suits – but with its own distinct story that will be unique to the franchise."

Korsh will executive produce and write alongside EP and showrunner Daniel Arkin.

Torres was one of the original cast members, exiting during the midseason finale of season 6 when her character moved to Chicago. Though she left the series, she has made several guest appearances, including the season 7 midseason finale. Her next appearance will be at the end of season 7 as she seeks help from her old firm to navigate the Windy City.

Along with Markle, another series original, Patrick J. Adams, will be leaving the series at the finale. But the show will continue and will add Katherine Heigl for season 8.

Suits returns for the second half of season 7 on March 28th at 9 p.m. ET on USA Network.
