The season finale of Crunchyroll's Jujutsu Kaisen, "Shibuya Incident – Gate, Close," finally has arrived and it left our heroes in a very awkward position for the season to come. It was a fantastic episode that shows how the government is slowly falling apart after the incident in Shibuya and how civilians have been left in the dark about what has transpired. However, we also see things keep getting progressively worse little by little. That said, there is a very special appearance of a character we all love, although not in the manner we wished to see them return.
I am not going to lie; this episode left me like Sall in that episode of Impractical Jokers: "What? Oh, hell no! Wait! Hold up! Huh? Oh, okay." There was so much, yet not a lot happening. Basically, the government and society crumbling around, but let us unpack this. At first there is a lot of talk between Yuki and Fake Geto about their ideologies and what will be the next step with cursed energy. Yuki believes the next step will be humans getting rid of it finally, and fake Geto dude thinks what comes next is optimizing it instead. Not only does he believe this, but he also has a plan set in motion to make things move along.
I am not going to lie; at first, it felt like a lot of talk until the real deal kicked in – fake Geto uses Mahito's technique of Idle Transfiguration on two different types of human non-sorcerers who have come into contact with cursed items and others, like Junpei, who had the potential of cursed techniques. The most surprising part was seeing Megumi's sister wake up from her long nap. It seems Fake Geto had carefully selected all these characters and will now force them to kill one another to bring back some sort of cursed golden era. He then tells Yuji he has very high expectations for him and then talks directly to Sukuna.
Before he takes off we see Uraume's ice around them disappear due to being poisoned with Choso's own blood. Fake Geto then releases an insane amount of cursed spirits and we see them go around feasting on humans and making everything worse. The government then seems to be falling apart as they try to come to an agreement on whether or not to release the existence of cursed spirits to the public as things start getting progressively worse. It felt like the beginning of a horror movie as he sees the points of view shifting from government to civilians, to the news cast – and then back to the blackhole that Shibuya has become. It was even scarier when a kid got involved and was almost eaten by one of them.
Thankfully one of my favorites showed up, with Yuta finally making an appearance. However, not in the manner I would like as he has been assigned to be Yuji's executioner, and he is on board as he wants to avenge his friend Inumaki who lost an arm to Sukuna. We also see Gojo has also been accused of conspiring with Geto to cause this incident, and the principal, Yaga, has also been sentenced to death. It was quite horrifying to see the effects this whole ordeal had in the Jujutsu society and wonder how much worse things are about to get with Fake Geto promising to bring everyone down pretty much. Before it ends we see Yuji in the middle of the street clapping to bring out curses and leaving viewers wondering if this is a reference to Aoi or if there is a hint of things to come. The stakes have definitely been elevated, and I wonder if there is any way at all to get out of this mess.
