Legends Of Tomorrow Season 3: A Bottle Episode Is Coming And I Don't Mean Kandor

A show like DC's Legends of Tomorrow is bound to have a big budget to go with all of the special effects. Add in all of the time-traveling and need for very specific sets and wardrobe, they can blow through that budget quickly. With next week's episode taking place in 1930s Hollywood, it should come as no surprise that We'll be getting a "bottle episode" soon.

Legends of Tomorrow

A bottle episode is a television term for an episode of a television series meant to be done as cheaply as possible using only existing sets. A good example of this was a season 5 episode of Arrow called Underneath where Oliver and Felicity are trapped in the bunker. The episodes tend to be more character driving and are used to expand relationships.

Legends executive producer Phil Klemmer talked about the reason for a "no-time-period-episode" with EW.com:

We blow through our production money and then some with our crossover, so it's the infamous bottle [episode], which always turns out to be great, but it's also driven by, 'How can we do it all on our standing sets for as cheaply as possible?

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim compared it to Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Cause and Effect" episode.

It's our Groundhog Day episode, but [Zari] is at the center of it.

Cause and Effect was the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode where the Enterprise ends up in a time loop that keeps ending with the destruction of the ship. Sounds like we might be getting a time loop here as well.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow airs Tuesdays at 9 PM on the CW.
