NXT 6/17/2020 Report Part 2 – Another Tag Team Championship Match?

In part one of our NXT report, Imperium defended their tag team championships against Breezango, Damian Priest had a hoss fight with Killian Dane, Robert Stone vomited in the ring, Aliya faced off with… wait a minute, back that up. Robert Stone did what? Guess you'll have to read part one before we find out what happened in the second half of NXT.

WWE NXT 6/17/2020

Adam Cole heads to the ring and grabs a mic. He mentions he's held the NXT title for 381 days. He says he's the hardest working and greatest champion in the business. He doesn't get why people can just decide they deserve title shots. He screws up and calls Karrion Kross Killian Kross, and WWE doesn't edit it, so I guess they were running so late NXT was shown live tonight. Cole also calls out Keith Lee, saying he'll win the North American Championship from him and be Adam Champ Champ.

Lee comes out with his belt and a mic. Before he can get started, though, Johnny Gargano comes out to the stage. Gargano says he doesn't care about the cool moment Cole and Lee are having in the ring. He says he pinned Lee last week, and he's coming after the title. He says he might as well come after Cole's title too. Lee inquires about Candice LeRae. Gargano blames Lee for LeRae getting hurt, but Lee said when he picked her up, she told him it was the most action she'd gotten all year. Gargano starts to flip out, but Finn Balor interrupts. He wants Lee's North American Championship for himself. Gargano says Balor wasn't a Triple Crown champion like him. Balor doesn't care and goes right to Lee. He says he'll take his title, and then he'll take Cole's next. Cole talks some smack back. William Regal interrupts from the Haitchtron and sets a triple threat match for the North American Champion next week with Gargano and Balor. The winner will go on to face Cole for his title in a winner takes all match. Seems like a good time for some commercials.

When NXT comes back, blonde interviewer (they'll say her name eventually and maybe I'll remember it) tries to interview Keith Lee, but Candice LeRay interrupts to yell at Lee. Mia Yim attacks LeRae, and they brawl backstage. Kayden Carter comes to the ring with Kacy Catanzaro. Dakota Kai comes out with Raquel Gonzalez. It's Kai vs. Carter one on one. Two women's matches in one night. Well, AEW can't compete with that. They don't have enough uninjured women on the roster.

I'm not sure why Catanzaro is even out here because she doesn't do anything as Gonzalez blatantly interferes in the match. Carter manages to overcome the double team and take control over Kai in the match. When Gonzales gets involved again, Catanzaro finally does something about it. Unfortunately, it's too late, as Kai is able to roll up Carter and then transition to an armbar and get the submission victory. In a black and white segment backstage, we see Karrion Kross's foot. Then, commercials.

When NXT comes back, we get a video promoting the return of Mercedes Martinez, and then Bronson Reed comes to the ring for a match with Leon Ruff. Reed is about the size of twelve Leon Ruffs. This should be a short one. It's three moves, in fact, all of them by Reed, with a frogsplash getting the three count. After the match, Reed calls out Karrion Kross for a match next week. He carries Ruff backstage with him. Outside the arena, we see someone has flattened Damian Priest's tires. Cameron Grimes drives by and offers to call him an uber, then speeds away laughing. NXT goes to commercials again.

Winner: Bronson Reed

Santos Escobar comes to the ring with Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde. Escobar says his former persona, El Hijo del Fantasma, was the best luchador ever. But after twenty years under a mask, he decided it was time for that to come to an end. He is the leader of leaders, and he's gonna make Mendoza and Wilde leaders too. Drake Maverick interrupts this speech. He runs into the ring and attacks the three men but is quickly overwhelmed. Maverick ends up being put through a table with a phantom driver. Next up is the main event, but first a commercial break.

After the break, Drake Maverick is loaded into an ambulance. The announcers promote next week's show. Bronson Reed vs. Karrion Kross. Damian Priest vs. Cameron Grimes. Johnny Gargano vs. Finn Balor vs. Keith Lee for the North American Championship.

Shotzi Blackheart comes to the ring in her tank. Tegan Nox comes out next. Then Sasha Banks and Bayley. The Women's Tag Team Championships may be the nicest belts in the company. Banks and Nox start it off with some grappling. They trade pin attempts. Nox tags in Blackheart, and she tries a pin of her own. Banks tags in Bayley, who has no time for grapples. She kicks Blackheart in the gut and whips her into the ropes, but Blackheart dodges her attack, lands a kick of her own, and rolls her up for two. Bayley whips Blackheart into the corner, but Blackheart reverses again and rolls her up for two. Frustrated, Bayley knees her in the back of the head, and NXT takes a commercial break.

Bayley is still in charge when the show comes back, driving her shoulder into Tegan Nox in the corner. Knox hits a double axhandle and tags in Blackheart. Blackheart knocks Bayley to the floor and hits a bulldog on Banks. She kicks her in the face and hits a discus punch, switchblade kick, and belly-to-back suplex, which gets a two-count. Banks rolls to the apron, and Blackheart goes for a kick through the ropes, but Banks dodges and hits a meteora on her. Banks rolls Blackheart in and covers her for a two-count.

Sasha tags in Bayley, who tries to whip Banks into Blackheart in the corner, but Blackheart dodges. Blackheart hits a headscissors on Bayley and tags in Nox. Nox and Blackheart hit dual cannonballs on Bayley and Banks. Nox chokeslams Banks onto Bayley from the apron to the outside. Blackheart hits a diving crossbody from the top rope on both women.

Blackheart brings Bayley into the ring for a double flippy s**t, but Banks breaks up the pin. Nox and Banks tag in and exchange punches, with Nox coming out on top. Nox gets Banks on her shoulder, and Banks tosses her off, but Blackheart gets a blind tag and hits a dropkick. They try to pin each other, and Banks rolls into the Banks Statement. Blackheart powers out and flips it over into Cattle Mutilation. Bayley tries to bring a chair in, but Nox takes it from her. The ref sees Nox with the chair and goes to yell at her, allowing Bayley to flip Banks back over, and Blackheart taps to the Banks Statement.

Winners and still Tag Team Champions: Sasha Banks and Bayley

As Banks and Bayley celebrate after the match, NXT Women's Champion Io Shirai comes out and attacks both women, sending them fleeing from the ring. The show ends with Shirai standing tall and trainees who have been cheering on command for the past sixteen hours chanting "NXT."

NXT was decent tonight. The main event was excellent, but the opener fell flat. There was a lot of filler. AEW was better tonight, but NXT is improving over its low point during the pandemic era.
