Russell T Davies Envisions a Future Doctor as a Black Woman in his Doctor Who Novel

Rose is Russell T Davies' novelisation of his first episode of the Doctor Who TV series – and his second Doctor Who novel. It's part of a series of new Target novelisations by the TV writers and showrunners, including Paul Cornell writing Twice Upon A Time and Steven Moffat writing The Day Of The Doctor.

In Rose, there was a scene where Clive, the Doctor conspiracy theorist visited by Rose Tyler and played by Mark Benton, pulls out a file saying that 'this is your Doctor' and showing Rose a series of scenes across history in which the Ninth Doctor appears.

In the novelisation, he goes further and we see other Doctors, some we know and some we don't.

Rose saw a photo of a man with a fantastic jaw, dressed in a tweed jacket and bow tie. Then Clive kept the sequence going; an older, angry man in a brown caretaker's coat, holding a mop; a blonde woman in braces running away from a giant frog in front of Buckingham Palace; a tall, bald black woman wielding a flaming sword; a young girl or boy in a hi-tech wheelchair with what looked like a robot dog at their side…

That's the Eleventh Doctor, the Twelfth Doctor, the Thirteenth Doctor and two new Doctors. One, as described, a tall, bald black woman and another as a young girl or boy. Looks like K9 came back too.

Regeneration can switch gender and racial configuration in the show – the very first non-Doctor regeneration shown in Planet Of The Spiders was such. And of late they have become more common with The Corsair, The General, River Song and Missy.

Doctor Whos yet to come, as envisioned by the man who brought back the TV show… and are we getting that giant frog in the upcoming series?
