Kansas City Chiefs Extend Coach's Contract While Firing General Manager
A very strange thing happened this week in Kansas City. Two months after the NFL draft, the Chiefs extended the contract of head coach Andy Reid. This isn't the strange part. Reid, age 59, took the team to a 12-4 record and an AFC West title. They've made the playoffs the last three years. Previously he did good things in Philadelphia taking the team to the playoffs many times. his record with the Chiefs is 43-21, two wins for every loss. Those are good numbers. The contract extension made perfect sense.
What was strange was, at the same time, the Chiefs fired general manager John Dorsey. The GM and head coach came in together in 2013. They've had the exact same amout of success and failure. In a statement on the firing, Chief Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said:
After consideration, we felt it was in his best interests and the best interests of the team to part ways now. This decision, while a difficult one, allows John to pursue other opportunities as we continue our preparations for the upcoming season and the seasons to come.
Reid gets a five year extension and Dorsey is shown the door. Before the duo's arrival, the Chiefs had four seasons of four wins or less over a six year period. They weren't very good. Now they're much better, getting to the playoffs and Dorsey is let go. Reid is a career 173-114-1 but 11-12 in the playoffs, 1-3 with the Chiefs. If the problem is they play well during the season and lose in the playoffs… that seems to have been going on with Reid for 14 years prior to Dorsey working with him.
Dorsey, for his part, was completely professional, saying:
I want to thank Clark, the Hunt family and the Chiefs fans for the opportunity to be a part of Chiefs Kingdom over the last four seasons. I believe this team is well positioned for the future and I wish Coach Reid, the players and the entire organization all the best.
In an era where coaches have been fired after a single season, the idea that Reid would earn an extension while Dorsey didn't seems really strange.
