Former NFL Quarterback Vito 'Babe' Parilli Dies At The Age Of 87
Former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Vito 'Babe' Parilli has died at the age of 87. The news was announced today by the New England Patriots. Parilli was also a member of the 1960s All-Decade Team, having played for 15 years for five teams, in two different leagues. A total of 189 games.
He was best known for being the starting quarterback for the Boston Patriots for seven seasons from 1961 to 1967. He was a member of the 1968 New York Jets, backing up Joe Namath during their Super Bowl run. He threw for over 400 yards and five touchdowns during that season. He was drafted out of Kentucky 4th overall in 1952, starting the first of two stints with the Green Bay Packers (1952-1953, 1957-1958) where he played for legendary coach, Paul 'Bear' Bryant. He spent the 1956 season with the Cleveland Browns and 1960 with the Oakland Raiders. He also played in the Canadian Football League for the Ottawa Rough Riders (1954-1955, 1959).
As a member of the Patriots, Parilli played in 94 games, made the AFL All-Star games three times and won the AFL's Comeback Player of the Year Award in 1966. Parilli held the franchise mark for most touchdown passes in a season (31 in 1964) until it was broken in 2007 when Tom Brady threw 50. He still sits fourth on New England's all-time career passing list with 16,747 yards and fourth with 132 touchdown passes on 2,413 attempts. He was voted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 1993.
