Pittsburgh Steelers To Remain In Locker Room During National Anthem
And the story keeps growing. ESPN has confirmed word that the Pittsburgh Steelers will remain in the locker room during the national anthem before their game with the Chicago Bears at 1 PM EST. The morning already started with players locking arms and more than a dozen kneeling during the Ravens and Jaguars game in London today.
A team official confirmed an earlier report by Jamie Erdahl of CBS who talked to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin who told the reporter:
We're not going to play politics. We're football players, we're football coaches. We're not participating in the anthem today — not to be disrespectful to the anthem, but to remove ourselves from the circumstance.
People shouldn't have to choose. If a guy wants to go about his normal business and participate in the anthem, he shouldn't be forced to choose sides. If a guy feels the need to do something, he shouldn't be separated from his teammate who chooses not to.
The Steelers have remained neutral on the protests until today, but Donald Trump's comments from Friday night has caused them to respond by skipping the national anthem as a team. Art Rooney II, Steelers team president, said that he supported the NFL's statement on the topic but had nothing specific to add of his own.
