Star Trek: LD S03E03 Review: Killer Klingon Clowns from Outer Space
Star Trek: Lower Decks episode "Mining the Mind's Mines" is beyond an exercise in alliteration. It focuses on a remote science outpost where stone orbs are bringing fantasies to life. Meanwhile, Tendi (Noël Wells) experiences her first day as a Senior Science Officer Trainee. Her biggest challenge? Trying to get a senior officer to actually listen to her. The bulk of the episode focuses on the Cerritos lower deckers in Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) trying to put away mysterious green stones competitively trying to complete their task faster than the Carlsbad lower deckers in ensigns Kearns (Kari Wahlgren), Cor'Dee (Carl Tart) and Young (Paul F. Tompkins), who is doing a different task entirely.
Given the nature of how things go with the series, things go from bad to worse as breaking those green stones causes nightmares to come to life and terrorize both away teams. Among those that could potentially kill them are Klingon clowns with Bat'leth arms. If there was ever a visual of overkill in the Star Trek franchise, that would be it. While the "kids" are off trying to fend off their monsters, the "adults" (senior officers) are dealing with the issue of playing "Hot Potato" with a stone in a diplomatic issue. It's a scene that slams into its logical conclusion because they had to find a way to fill out the air time for this absurdity, and it's on brand for this type of comedy.
Directed by Fill Marc Sagadraca (Sonic the Hedgehog 2) and written by Brian Bradley (HBO Max's Head of the Class), there's nothing particularly profound about the episode we haven't seen before. It would have been nice to see Wells' Tendi shine more, given her storyline, but the character's meek nature, along with the show's need to produce action for action's sake, took away from that potential.
