Star Trek: Prodigy Creators Discuss S02 Complementing S01, S03 Hopes

Dan and Kevin Hageman discuss how Season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy complements Season 1 & teases how it could lead to a third season on Netflix.

Article Summary

  • Star Trek: Prodigy's move to Netflix sets stage for broader audience reach.
  • Season 2 of Prodigy wraps up existing arcs, teases a promising Season 3.
  • Hageman brothers ready for Prodigy's fate, with a complete story if needed.
  • Veteran Voyager actors reprise roles, enriching Prodigy's Starfleet legacy.

It seems like the Star Trek universe was too big to be contained on Paramount+ as per the decision to license the films and send Prodigy off to find a new home at Netflix. Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise that expanding the franchise's proven reach into the platform has worked hosting older shows like The Next Generation before. While the Dan & Kevin Hageman-created animated series has nowhere near the history of the Patrick Stewart-starred series, they hope its mix of original characters and its canonical ties to Voyager can continue to greater success speaking with Virtual Trek Con's Star Trek and Chill podcast to discuss how season two compliments season one and season three possibilities given Netflix's blessing.

"The end of season 1 we think is great. End of season 2 is equally great. And it has this place where it feels like it wraps up…" Dan said. "Not just wraps up season 2, but season 2 is like the second half of season 1," added Kevin. As far as where season two goes from there, Dan expanded, "It really wraps everything you want out of seasons 1 and 2, but it really opens the door to what season 3 potentially could be. And whether that hits now, or in five years, or whenever the time is right, it'll feel natural, which I'm really happy about." The Hageman's play up both scenarios knowing their stand on Netflix could be their last on Prodigy. "Dan saying worst case scenario, we never get picked up again, there's no more Star Trek: Prodigy ever, we feel like the end of season 2 is a really beautiful closing. It'll feel complete. But there's still… what we do is there's a great little promise of something," Kevin said. "If we get the call [saying] 'We want season 3', because we're animation, it's gonna take minimum two years. More likely three," Dan added.

Prodigy saw the return of two Voyager stars, Kate Mulgrew and Robert Beltran, reprising their respective roles as Janeway and Chakotay, the two leads of the UPN series. Mulgrew pulled double duty not only playing the vice admiral, but her holographic counterpart that acts as the guide of the U.S.S. Protostar. Chakotay was revealed to be its original captain trying to prevent the top secret vessel from falling into the wrong hands. Season two will see the return of Robert Picardo as The Doctor, the Emergency Medical Hologram who was allowed to evolve well beyond his original programming. He appeared in all seven seasons of the UPN series and made a cameo in the 1996 feature First Contact. Prodigy season one is available on Netflix, with season two set to premiere in 2024.
