Vision: Kevin Feige on "Picard" Season 3 Selling Him on Terry Matalas
Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige on how Picard Season 3 sold him on showrunner Terry Matalas for Vision and how Star Trek influenced the MCU.
As Star Trek: Picard season three showrunner Terry Matalas awaited his franchise future from Paramount, he conceptualized Star Trek: Legacy, a follow-up series that continues the journey of the U.S.S. Titan-A, which was rebranded the U.S.S. Enterprise-G by the series finale with Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Commander Raffi Musifer (Michelle Hurd), and Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) to new adventures after they and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D saved the Federation from the Borg's latest, and perhaps last, attempt at conquering Earth. As Paramount faced an uncertain future but eventually reached a deal to merge with Skydance (though still pending), Marvel Studios recruited Matalas to act as showrunner for their Vision series, which is a spinoff of Disney+'s WandaVision with Paul Bettany reprising the role of the android. Matalas's work not only earned the praise of the greater Star Trek community but also caught the eye of Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios.
Marvel Studios Kevin Feige on Why Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Led Him to Recruit Terry Matalas for 'Vision'
"That's how I got to know him," Feige told Inverse. "It was from his amazing [work on Picard Season 3]. I said: This is incredible. I don't know how this exists. Let me find the person who made this." The long-time executive has a fondness for the Star Trek franchise, citing The Next Generation finale as one of his favorite TV endings, how The Original Series films helped influence the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even presented the Saturn Awards Lifetime Achievement Award to the TNG cast on top of the four other awards won by Picard at the 2024 ceremony. He even appeared in the podcast Inglorious Treksperts to discuss his love for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
Regarding who Matalas could recruit for Vision, a few names appeared on both 12 Monkeys and Picard like Todd Stashwick, Aaron Stanford, and Kirk Acevedo. Faran Tahir was in 12 Monkeys and the 2009 J. J. Abrams soft reboot of Star Trek. Vision is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
