X-Men '97, What If…?, Marvel Zombies & More: Marvel Studios Updates
As far as Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated upcoming animation slate goes, it looks like some questions are about to be answered during San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) Day #2 panel today. Interested in seeing what series head writer Beau DeMayo has in store for X-Men '97? Or how the streamer will be approaching an animated take on Marvel Zombies? And how about that second season of What If…?, too… right? Of course, as much as those three together would be more than enough for the panel, there's always the possibility of one or two surprises. So today (from 11:45 am PT-1:15 pm PT), Marvel Studios head of streaming, television & animation Brad Winderbaum; head of visual development Ryan Meinerding; and a number of special guests will be offering waves of updates that will include exclusive looks at all three previously-mentioned series… and more (remember Spider-Man: Freshman Year and I Am Groot?).
So here are some of the highlights (and you can check out our entire liveblog coverage from Bleeding Cool Editor-in-Chief Kaitlyn Booth here):
The official trailer for I Am Groot dropped earlier today (and you can check it out here).
We learned that What If…? will return for a second season in early 2023 and has been renewed for a third season.
BONUS: Attendees screened a Season 2 episode: "What If… Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?"
Spider-Man: Freshman Year will hit the streaming service in 2024 (including appearances from Doctor Strange, Harry & Norman Osborn, Amadeus Cho, Charlie Cox's Daredevil & Nico Minoru), and has been renewed for Spider-Man: Sophomore Year.
Marvel Zombies will be rated TV-MA and is set to stream in 2024, zombie versions of Ghost, Abomination, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Okoye, and Captain America. New heroes will include Jimmy Woo, Kate Bishop, Yelena, Shang Chi, and Ms. Marvel.
X-Men '97 will feature Sunspot, Cable, Bishop, and Nightcrawler among the newest additions- with Magneto as team leader. The series is set to hit streaming screens in Fall 2023, with a second season already getting a greenlight.
