Young Justice: Outsiders Season 3, Episode 5 'Away Mission' – Hive/New Gods Tensions Grow (SPOILER RECAP)

Welcome to Bleeding Cool's weekly recap of DC Universe's Young Justice: Outsiders, as we jump right in with our look at the season's fifth episode, 'Away Mission':

New Genesis. August 4.

Young Justice: Outsiders Season 3, Episode 5 'Away Mission' – Hive/New Gods Tensions Grow (SPOILER RECAP)

On New Genesis, members of the Hive led by Mantis and including Forager, meet with Orion and a pair of metahumans to make a trade. The bugs deliver minerals they mined from New Genesis. Orion deems their offering acceptable–but he double-crosses the bug, taking the minerals and giving nothing in return. The bugs are furious, with Mantis declaring that the New Gods have no honor and deserve death. Forager isn't so sure about that, however…

Bear boom-tubes to Happy Harbor to request Conner's assistance. The Forever People of New Genesis have been investigating the growing violence between the bugs and the New Gods and they have discovered earthling metahuman DNA. Bear suggests that the team, with their experience handling earthling metahumans, might be able to get to the bottom of what's going on. Conner says that he's needed at home, but volunteers M'gann and the team to travel to New Genesis to help.

Happy Harbor.

Young Justice: Outsiders Season 3, Episode 5 'Away Mission' – Hive/New Gods Tensions Grow (SPOILER RECAP)

Conner is hanging out with Brion and Snapper when Dick arrives with Jeff, Tigress, and Halo. Dick has hacked the League computer to restore Jeff's portal access after it was revoked upon his resignation, establish portal access for Brion and Halo, and to have the League's satellites and database search for any information on Halo' identity…something he should have started the minute they returned from Markovia.

Dick, Conner, Jeff, Tigress, and Snapper discuss what to do with the Markovian exiles. Jeff says that Dr. Jace wanted to come with him, but Conner isn't okay with her knowing where he lives and is hiding Brion. Snapper suggests they could make Halo and Brion a part of the team, since both have metahuman abilities. Tigress rankles, stating that powers aren't a prerequisite for joining; Dick adds that neither are they a free pass. Membership requires wanting to be a hero, and no one is sure that's what either Halo or Brion want. Conner doesn't trust Halo's lack of memory, citing how Red Arrow was brainwashed into letting the Light aboard the Watchtower back in season one. Doesn't help that Brion's a ball of rage ready to blow at any time.

On cue, something explodes outside. Brion is showing off his abilities to Halo. Dick asks for a demonstration, so they can all see what Brion is capable of. Dick and Conner attempt to get Brion to focus and give a demonstration of precision and control, which Brion fails. Halo suggests he take a break while she tries her skills. Tigress spars with Halo, trying to get her to shift between her auras from defense (red aura) to evasion and flight (orange aura). During the match, Halo's aura turns yellow, to everyone's surprise. When asked what she should do, the team tells Halo to try it out and see what happens. Halo fires a blast of energy, knocking herself back, where her purple aura heals her.

Brion packs to leave. Dick asks Brion where he's going and what he wants. Brion states that he doesn't know. Conner suggests that Brion needs direction, purpose, and a clear goal. Dick says that if Brion stays, then they'll look for his abducted sister. Brion agrees, for Tara's sake.

New Genesis.

Young Justice: Outsiders Season 3, Episode 5 'Away Mission' – Hive/New Gods Tensions Grow (SPOILER RECAP)

On New Genesis, Forager works with Bear to lead the team of M'gann, Static Shock, Wonder Girl, Blue Beetle, Kid Flash, and Thirteen to the site of the violence. The group is confronted by Mantis, who accuses Forager of conspiring with Bear and the New Gods. Bear insists that Orion is not on New Genesis and that whoever the bugs dealt with was an imposter. M'gann has the bugs arrange another transaction so that she can figure out what's going on.

At the arranged time and place, the fake Orion and his pair of metahumans show up. M'gann feels that the Orion imposter is using telepathy to stoke the Hive's anger toward the New Gods. She recognizes the imposter as her brother, M'comm. M'comm says that he is doing a favor for someone by stirring up violence on New Genesis in exchange for help in his rebellion against the Green and Red Martians on Mars. M'gann tries to convince her brother to let go of his hatred, but he refuses to do so. He tells her that love is her weakness, killing his metahuman henchmen to prove that he can hurt her. M'comm tells her that if she interferes again, he will kill her.

Their hatred flowing, the bugs have had enough of the earthlings, Martians, and New Gods. Mantis leads the attack against everyone else, but Forager intervenes. Mantis declares Forager a race traitor and banishes him from New Genesis. The team says that Forager can come with them. Forager is reluctant to leave his home, but M'gann assures him it's not forever, just for now.
