'Straight Outta Compton' Writer Andrea Berloff To Direct An Adaptation Of Ollie Masters And Ming Doyle's Vertigo Comic, The Kitchen

the kitchenOur of the major studios making big budget movies New Line is the one that is taking the most chances on first time directors. Andrea Berloff has been hired to direct the adaption of DC/Vertigo comic book The Kitchen by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle for the studio. Berloff was apparently working on the screenplay already and New Line was so impressed with what she has accomplished that they have given her the directors chair. As mentioned in a previous post female directors made up 7% of the major releases in 2016 so to see some fresh blood is a good thing.

The Kitchen is also part of that same sense of progress in that it's a female driven story. The Hollywood Reporter summarizes the series as such.

The Kitchen is an Irish mafia story set in Hell's Kitchen, New York, in the 1970s. When the FBI does a sweep of the mob, several men are arrested. Their wives end up taking over … and running the business much more viciously than the men ever did.

Also mentioned in a previous post if a woman is part of the creative team then there is an 86% chance that the main characters will be women. Berloff has been following the career path that most only dream of; she started out as an assistant to company co-founders Bob and Eva Shaye.

"I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to direct a film that is fiercely, unapologetically female-driven," said Berloff. "Having started my career as an assistant to Eva and Bob Shaye, embarking on this journey with New Line is truly a surreal dream."

Berloff has been a name to watch since she co-wrote the fantastic Straight Outta Compton which earned her an Oscar nomination. She is a bright up and comer and a name to keep an eye out in the coming years.
