Things We Learned From The Christopher Nolan 4K Box Set Special Features- "Inception"

Probably my personal favorite out of the filmography of Christopher Nolan (so far) would have to be Inception. The melding of science fiction, dreamscapes, and a bone rattling score as just the tip of why.

Having a film that literally leaves the ending up to the viewer is something few writers and directors have the *ahem* balls to do, and Inception does this.  Does it really matter that we never know if the top stops spinning?  It's not Leo's totem after all, and so would it really signal his being lost into Maude's construct rather than his own?  It's part of what makes the film so special.

Things We Learned From The Christopher Nolan 4K Box Set Special Features- "Inception"

The recently released Christopher Nolan 4K Ultra HD box set is pretty incredible- featuring all three of Nolan's Batman films, The PrestigeInception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk, the collection is the ultimate way to enjoy the flicks.  The 21-disc set also contains all the films mentioned on Blu-Ray, as well as a separate case of special feature discs for each film.  (This is what really got me excited, as again, I am that person who still buys physical media for the featurettes and BTS goodies.)

The first featurette "Dreams: Cinema of the Subconscious" opens with an intro with Joseph Gordon Levitt talking about how much time humans spend sleeping/dreaming. "Dreams" then progresses into a full documentary about the science of dreams including interviews with doctors, professionals, and experts in the field.

"Taking on the challenge of a film that's set within a dream state- it wasn't that far off for me in what making movies is, if that makes any sense.  We all have to sort of take on an alternate reality ourselves in different character's shoes, and be in different environments that ARE a dream," Leonardo diCaprio says in the "Dreams" docu about working on Inception.

Chris Nolan said:" Key components- you don't feel yourself enter the dream, but you do feel yourself come out of it, waking. It was really important for me to make the film feel real in that way, that you find yourself within the dream.  But as the experience ends, you become aware of where you are in the world above the dream."

The disc also contains:

  • "Inception: The Cobol Job" , a 14:33 minute motion comic that is a prologue of how Cobb, Arthur, and Nash all became part of the job to do the extraction on Saito.
  • special 5.1 soundtrack mix available on this disc, which is pretty amazing.
  • concept art gallery and a promotional art archive
  • a complete collection of trailers & TV spots
  • something called the Project Somnacin: Confidential Files which requires a BD-Live enabled Blu-Ray disc player with internet and storage to activate.  (Boooo.)

If you already own one of the previous releases of this film, you're not missing anything new. But I highly suggest the box set for the Nolan fan and collector. Check back again on Bleeding Cool for additional reviews of the other discs in the set.
