Riz Ahmed Wants to Co-Write Ms. Marvel Movie with Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani
Riz Ahmed wants to co-write a Ms. Marvel film with Mindy Kaling and Kumail Nanjiani, and we're here for it.
Ahmed, whom you may know from The Night Of (for which he became the first Muslim to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category), as his rap persona Riz MC, or from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is of British-Pakistani descent. The current Ms. Marvel is Kamala Khan, and she's Marvel's first Muslim character.
Kaling has built a small empire as a writer/director/producer. Her show The Mindy Project was one of the few featuring an Indian female protagonist on network TV in the leading role. She wrote multiple episodes of The Office (including one of my favorites, 'Niagara') and will next be seen in Ocean's 8.
Nanjiani stars as Dinesh on Silicon Valley and recently was nominated for an Academy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture for The Big Sick. The Big Sick is based on the true story of how he and his wife got married; part of it features him having to deal with his Muslim family not wanting him to marry a white woman.
I can't think of a better trio to handle the film. Marvel's Kevin Feige has already confirmed plans for a Ms. Marvel film sometime after Captain Marvel, and he's already got the two of them (and the current Ms. Marvel editors chomping at the bit for the opportunity).
We'd love to see a Ms. Marvel film written by Ahmed and Kaling. The other wonderful question would be: who's going to play Kamala Khan?
