The Hellboy Reboot Gets Pushed Back to April 2019
It sounds like those of you excited about the reboot for Hellboy are going to have to wait a little longer. According to The Hollywood Reporter Summit Entertainment has decided to push the reboot back from January 11, 2019 to April 12, 2019. This is both surprising and not surprising at the same time. We haven't heard virtually anything about this movie aside from a few images and various cast members doing interviews. The movie will have a panel at New York Comic Con where it is widely believed the first trailer will drop.
The move could be both a good thing and a bad thing. On one hand January, and even more so the first two weeks of January, are considered one of the "dead zones". It's when movies a studio doesn't have a lot of faith in tend to come out or it's wide releases of Oscar bait. It's not usually a time to release a movie like Hellboy. This delay could signal that Summit has a decent amount of faith in the project and want to give the movie a better release date.
That being said moving away from the dead zone of early January means a lot more competition. At the moment Hellboy is set to open opposite The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle which stars Robert Downey Jr. Rami Malek, and Tom Holland. We haven't seen anything from that yet so it's an unknown quantity at the moment but that is a pretty impressive cast. The week before is where Hellboy could run into problems with Shazam! and Pet Sematary both opening on April 5th. That's not to say there might not be any problems from Dumbo, if it does well, which opens two weeks before.
The rest of April is looking pretty quiet for now but something could easily swoop in and take over the box office. There are plenty of positives and negatives to this move and it's still a bit too early to tell exactly who will win in the end. The quality ultimately will be the deciding factor and until we see some footage we have no way of knowing.
Summary: Hellboy comes to England, where he must defeat Merlin's consort and Nimue the Blood Queen. But their battle will bring about the end of the world, a fate he desperately tries to turn away.
Hellboy, directed by Neil Marshall, will star David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Sasha Lane, Penelope Mitchell, and Ian McShane. It will be released on April 12, 2019.
