'Humblewood' Brings a New Setting and Look to 5e D&D

One of the neater aspects of the Open Game License is that independent developers can add something new and unique to an existing game setting. That's exactly what Hit Point Press aims to do with their Everwood setting, which is wrapping up its funding period on Kickstarter on April 11th, 2019.

Humblewood is a new campaign setting that adds a different look and feel to standard Dungeons & Dragons, which might make the game more enticing for people who aren't intrigued by your standard swords and sorcery tropes. With Humblewood, characters take on the roles of different woodland creatures.

The World

In the world of Everden, nestled between the mighty Crest mountain range and the vast marshes of the Mokk Fields, lies a mystical forest known as Humblewood that hums with the Great Rhythm of nature. It has been ruled for generations by the birdfolk who inhabit the Great Tree-City of Alderheart. Humblewood has endured for centuries thanks to the industry and compassion of its people…

…but now the fires have come, and the Woods have been thrown into chaos. Flames ravage the land and destroy the homes of the humblefolk, stoking a growing resentment against the birdfolk, whose cities have managed to avoid the worst of the fires so far. Hatred burns in the hearts of those who have lost lives they cherished, and these once peaceful peoples now take up the sword and turn to banditry. The disaffected turn their gaze on Alderheart, and threaten to reduce an age of peace to ashes…

…yet there is still hope. Even in these dark times, brave heroes can be found within the Wood. Only they can quell the raging flames that have been unleashed upon the land, and restore balance to the realm. Will you answer the call?

The setting is unique and evocative, and players have can play multiple birdfolk and humblefolk, which you can see below:

Each of the different folk have different attributes, so the Corvum safeguard knowledge; the Strig, who strive to do the right thing; the Mapach, who are very resourceful, or the brave Jerbeen.

Adventures take place in the Humblewood, trying to keep the folk of the woods safe from new threats and terrible menace.

There are plenty of stretch goals available already, and some really cool miniatures, too!

I think settings like this are super important for the future of role playing games, which need to adapt to an ever-changing audience base that would probably love to play an rpg, but find the typical settings evidenced in the bigger games unappealing. Also, Humblewood looks like it would be a blast for kids who want to play D&D!

Humblewood is being produced by the same crew that makes the Deck of Many card supplements, which are a great asset for any D&D game!
