[Castle Of Horror] 'Captain Nemo And The Underwater City' Actually Thinks Dictatorship Pretty Rad
This week, we continue our retrospective on movies featuring Jules Verne's immortal Captain Nemo (tying in with the release of Young Captain Nemo in March) with the UK 1969 film Captain Nemo and the Underwater City.
This film gives us a strange, alternate Captain Nemo played by the slightly surly American Robert Ryan, who has this time turned his back on the world and founded an underwater utopia. And what a colorful utopia it is! Nemo's city of Templemer is a strange 1960s vision of dome-city splendor, complete with amazing drink-dispensing technology, enormous swimming pools, cotton candy, officers who dress like officers and citizens who dress like Chloris Leachman on Paradise Island. And a giant monster stingray. A very strange film. We had fun discussing it.
