Advance Review: HaloGen # 1 From Archaia Is A Gateway To Sci-Fi

unnamed

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advanced copy of the new sci-fi limited series HaloGen. Coming from Archaia, an imprint of award winning publisher BOOM! Studios, and creative team Josh Tierney, Afu Chan, and Giannis Milonogiannis, issue #1 is spectacular. If you're a fan of sci-fi comics, you absolutely must add HaloGen to your pull list! The story is complex, enthralling, and includes some very visually appealing art.

It all begins with some background on Det'Houna, a dead god, and what happened to the cultists that dealt with said god five years prior. We are then transported to the futuristic setting Cityship Q in present day, and learn a bit about the society. It is divided into two sections: the top, which houses the brighter, wealthier, educated, and the bottom, where the repressed and disorderly are. The setting really enhanced my reading experience. We are shown the bright city lights with the words, "The upper city is the flower," and a more gloomy panel with the words, "A bar in the root." With two simple panels and two simple lines you are given the feeling of knowing exactly where these characters are physically and mentally.

All of this leads up to our first encounter with main character Rell, who is given the task to uncover the mystery behind Det'Houna's body and what it's being used for. Her character is a torn soul, unhappy with who she is and the powers she possesses, but that doesn't stop her from moving forward. I found her to be very admirable and brave as she progresses throughout the issue. One particular encounter with a robot that malfunctioned years prior, showed a lot of depth to Rell's personality. She does her job well, and sticks to her own belief system.

Overall, the plot is well-written and intricate. The cast of characters seem to play well off one another and I look forward to learning more about them as the comic progresses. If you're a fan of books like Rocket Girl, you should definitely check this out. However, I will say that even if you don't normally read titles like this, this is a great gateway comic to the sci-fi genre. HaloGen #1 releases on March 4th.

HaloGen #1 is currently listed in Previews World with item code: JAN151145 and reaches FOC on Monday, February 9th.
