Rise of the Fangirls: Women in Recent Geek Culture
In 2010, nine women gathered onstage in front of a packed and engaged crowd at Comic-Con International to dispel the myth that "Geek Girls, like unicorns, don't exist." Headlines coming out of Comic-Con itself proclaim that "women totally dominate" the event and that we are experiencing the rise of fangirls. But how far have women in geek culture really come since that landmark "Geek Girls Exist" panel? Andrea Letamendi (Pop Culture Hero Association), Jamie Broadax (Black Girl Nerds), Kristin Rielly (Geek Girls Network), Suzanne Scott (UT-Austin), Sam Maggs (Bioware, Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy), Marie Poole (Lone Shark Games), and moderator Jennifer K. Comics Arts Conference #10: Queering Comics
Johnathan Flowers (Southern Illinois University Carbondale) uses the work of Sara Ahmed to analyze Bitch Planet's "non-compliance" as the phenomenological experience of being against the established order, using examples from the comic and the larger cultural movement to articulate non-compliance as an act of resistance. Ayanna Dozier (McGill University) examines how Bitch Planet's use of subversive humor, sartorial advertisements, and essay writing serve as a feminist disruption of the comic book canon, as a demonstration of the parodic that is only successful because of De Connick's thoughtful and careful interrogation of how gender affects bodies that exist on the intersection of race and class. Ajani Brown (San Diego State University) traces the history of Jill Trent, Science Sleuth, from the Golden Age to her recent reboot by Super Dames Comics, discussing the feminist commentary in select 1940s issues, the futurist aspect of the series, and the 2015 change in racial identity.

Production Designers of the Art Directors Guild Who Work in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Genre
The production designer reads 100 pages of nothing-but-words-on-paper and then must literally dream up the most perfect of all possible worlds in which the tale should take place. Though the story may be set in some mythic past, the here and now, or some nearly unimaginable future, it's always human emotion rendered in color and composition. And following that, the designer must gather and organize an army of artists who, over months or years, in plaster or in pixels, will somehow render that design for the big screen. Panelists are Dave Blass (Preacher), James Chinlund (War for the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Avengers), Sean Haworth (Deadpool), and Patrick Tatopoulos (Die Hard 4, Dark City, I, Robot). Trek Talks: Star Trek & NASA Boldly Go
Star Trek has influenced many of us to fall in love with the infinite possibilities of space exploration. The various television series and films have also made an indelible impact on NASA. NASA scientists, engineers and astronauts often cite Star Trek as inspiring them to pursue careers in their fields. (Nichelle Nichols even helped NASA recruit astronauts in the 1980s.) Today, NASA is turning science fiction into reality. Humans now live and work in space full time on the International Space Station. SNASA continues its goal of sending humans to Mars in the 2030s. How does NASA's vision of the future mimic the world of Star Trek and where does it differ? What technologies in the Star Trek world have paved the way for real technologies being developed by NASA? This moderated discussion in collaboration with CBS will be accompanied by the latest visual and graphics of some of NASA's newest and most exciting missions. Robert Picardo, who portrayed The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager, moderates a panel that includes Astronaut Kjell Lindgren (NASA Johnson Space Center), Amber Staughn (astrophysicist, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center), Bobak Ferdowsi (flight systems engineer, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory), and Jay Falker (early stage portfolio executive, Space Technology Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters).

Time After Time Pilot Screening and Q&A
Using the 1979 novel and movie as a launching point, Time After Time chronicles the epic adventures of a young H.G. Wells. At the age of 28, the 19th-century scholar has yet to publish any of his landmark science fiction novels, but his idealistic thinking and radical ideas have led him to actually create a time machine. When his longtime friend-the charismatic (and secretly psychopathic) Dr. John Stevenson, a.k.a. Jack the Ripper, finds himself cornered by the authorities at Wells's London home, he escapes to present-day New York City using the time machine. Naturally, Wells follows, but instead of the utopian society he imagined would be in the future, he finds a world more aligned to Stevenson's temperament. Fortunately, Wells meets up with Jane Walker, an assistant curator at a museum staging an H. G. Wells exhibition. As Wells and Jane come together, they will not only play a dangerous endgame with Stevenson, but also find themselves involved with the incredible characters and scenarios that inspired Wells' War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and more. See a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a panel with executive producers Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Dawson's Creek, The Following, Scream movies) and Marcos Siega (Blindspot, The Following, The Vampire Diaries, Dexter, Cold Case, Veronica Mars) and series stars Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter films, Pitch Perfect, Game of Thrones, 13 Hours, UnREAL) and Genesis Rodriguez (Identity Thief, Man on a Ledge, Entourage, Big Hero 6). Hall H and Ballroom 20 Saturday Playback Free Play
Didn't get into Hall H or Ballroom 20 today? We feel your pain! On hand to kick off the panel will be the assistant to the director of programming for Comic-Con, Tommy Goldbach, in this block that rebroadcasts some of the day's popular panels from those two giant rooms. Best of all, those in attendance will get to vote in a show of applause on what they want to see. It's democracy at its finest, and it's a second or maybe even a third chance to see these panels. (Please note: these playbacks will include only the panel discussions. None of the film clips or footage shown at the live events will be shown here.)
Saturday July 23, 2016 9:40pm – 10:40pm
Marriott Grand Ballroom 5-6, Marriott Marquis & Marina
