Booze Geek – Impey Barbicane's Moon Gun, And A Trip To The Moon
By Dylan Gonzalez
Beer: Impey Barbicane's Moon Gun
Brewery: DuClaw Brewing Company
ABV: 5%
With the summer now in full swing, I like to keep a few session style beers on hand if it is particularly hot out and I just want something easy to drink. I grabbed a pack of DuClaw's Impey Barbicane's Moon Gun to fill my needs.
Moon Gun, a session amber ale as opposed to IPA, was a cloudy brown color and produced a medium head that dissipated pretty quick. It left behind a lasting ring of lacing. I noticed a lot of unfiltered sediment floating around my beer too. The beer gave off the scent of mild malt and light hops.
Surprisingly, this beer was very hoppy for an amber ale. I detected almost no malt in the body until the finish. Even then, it was very subtle. On the palate, the beer felt thick and there was a good amount of carbonation present.
Overall, Moon Gun was not bad, but nothing particularly special. The best thing it has going for it was the name and use of the iconic image from the film, A Trip to the Moon.
What to Drink This To:
Obviously this beer derives its inspiration from the 1902 silent film, A Trip to the Moon, inspired by the Jules Verne novel and directed by George Melies. It is considered the first science fiction film and a landmark of cinema. Its special effects, production values, and length for its time have left a lasting legacy on film as a whole. And of course, everybody recognizes the iconic image of the Moon Man with the bullet in his eye.
