Comic Shops Get Mech Cadet Yu TPB In January – Bookstores Have To Wait 4 Months

Last month, Boom! Studios "promoted" Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa's Mech Cadet Yu series to an ongoing after a positive reaction to the first issue.

As a "thank YU" to retailers, Boom! Studios President of Publishing & Marketing Filip Sablik just announced to a roomful of comic shop owners at the Diamond Retailer Breakfast at Baltimore Comic-Con that, in an unprecedented move, the publisher will be offering the Vol. 1 collected trade paperback in January 2018 exclusively to the direct market, while holding the book market release back until May.

Comic shops usually only get a six-day headstart with trade paperbacks and graphic novels before they go on sale in bookstores, so a four-month window is unheard of.

The trade, which collects issues #1-4, will be accompanied in January by the release of issue #5, which never would have happened if not for all of the retailers who supported the series from the get-go. So consider this a thank you to them…

Mech Cadet Yu #1, an original series about a boy and a giant robot that reteamed Amadeus Cho-creators Greg Pak (Weapon X) and Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel).

Once a year, giant robots from outer space come to Earth and bond with young cadets from the elite Sky Corps Academy to defend the world from the terrifying aliens known as the Sharg. It's a great honor to be chosen, but this year…well, the wrong kid was picked.
