It's All About Coming Together In Mouse Guard: Legends Of The Guard Vol. 3 #4
Mouse Guard creator David Petersen brings us another excellent group of writers/illustrators this month in Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard Volume 3 #4. The volume gathers the mice together at a tavern in normal fashion, as they swap stories about their adventures. The incentive; the mouse with the best story has their bar tab paid in full. From Archaia, an imprint of award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios, Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard Vol. 3 #4, features three stories: The Lament of Poor Lenora, written and illustrated by Becky Cloonan, The Watchers Stone, written and illustrated by Ryan Lang, and Deep and Dark, written by Fabian Rangel Jr., with art by Aaron Conley.
So, I'm not biased or anything by my immense love of Gotham Academy, but I must say that Becky Cloonan's story was my favorite out of the three. From the moment I read the title I was pretty happy. Perhaps it's because it was written in sonnet form, because I really did enjoy that aspect of it. However, Colonna's art style is so beautiful that I give credit to that as well. A short piece filled with a deep meaning, and an ending line that made me smirk.
Overall, I'm so pleased with the way this run went. David Petersen truly writes great things, and reading this has made me want to read many more Mouse Guard works. I won't spoil how things end up, because as you know, someone still needs that bar tab paid in full. However, I do want to talk about the lines that Petersen closes with. He writes, "You've done it again June…you've made an evening special by gathering folks in your tavern and just letting them be themselves."
When I read that, I sat back in my chair and smiled. That's where the magic lies in this series. That's the wonderful feeling you get when you flip through the pages. The stories that are told are adventures from different aspects, different artists, and different writers who all have refreshing perspectives to share. This book is about coming together, and that's a really spectacular thing. With that said, be sure to pick up Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard Vol. 3 #4!
