Cosplay All Over The World: Nel From Brooklyn

SteelEndymion Mageto, Senior Cosplay Correspondent for Bleeding Cool is talking to cosplayers ahead of NYCC. He talked to Nel…

Tell us some basic information about yourself.

I am originally from Brooklyn where my grandmother taught me how to sew and bake among other creative things.

How long have you been going to NYCC?

This will make my seventh year going to NYCC. Before they changed the time of year the convention was held NYCC used to fall on my birthday and I would go to celebrate.

What was your first time at NYCC like?

My first NYCC was an amazing experience. It was one of the first times that I had been around that many other people that had the same interests as me and got the weird jokes I made. It made me just want to keep going and to go to other similar events.

Catwoman

If you could change one thing about NYCC what would it be?

The terrible overcrowding that has been occurring over the past few years pared with the crowd's lack of costume respect would be what I change the most. I have heard from so many other costumers complain that their costumes get ruined by other con goers that don't seem to care that they have damaged the costume of a stranger.

What makes NYCC different from other conventions?

I love the fact that there is a convention so close to home that I can go to with out much hassle and get to see so many of my friends.

Warbird

What is your best memory from NYCC?

My best NYCC memory is from my first time there and I was wearing a Doctor Who shirt and just got the autograph from the seventh Doctor and two young boys saw my shirt and were just so excited that there was another Whovian in the crowd and were floored by the fact that I managed to get the Doctor's autograph and ran off in his direction when I told them where to find him.

Misa2Apart from cosplay what do you look forward to most at NYCC?

I really enjoy hanging out with old friends and making new ones.

What costume are you working on for NYCC this year?

I am currently working on my Psylocke/Fantomex costume which I will be wearing for the first time at NYCC.

How long have you been cosplaying?

This is my third year cosplaying where I make my costumes.

Which costume are you most proud of ?

I am most proud of my Warbird costume. It is a costume that I have never seen done by others and I really feel that I have been able to do an accurate interpretation of one of my favorite characters.

How do you decide on which costumes you'll work on next? Is it by the level of challenge? Your own feelings about the character?

I usually cosplay characters that I really like and think are really special for some reason or another. I don't usually pick a costume based on its difficulty but I have started liking characters with more complicated costumes so go figure.

Which other cosplayers do you admire? Are there any that you'd most like to work or compete with?

I admire all of my cosplay friends because they are all so incredibly talented so they are the ones I would most like to work with.

What are the most difficult parts of making or wearing your costumes?

For me the most difficult part of wearing my costumes is to have no one recognize the character that I am dressed as. That is a complete blow to the ego, especially after you spend so much time and money on a costume.

What is the hardest part thing about cosplay?

Cosplay can be physically exhausting and trying to keep up with the pace of a con while in costume can be daunting.

What advice would you have for anyone cosplaying for the first time at NYCC?

For anyone cosplaying for the first time at NYCC I would suggest having a good repair kit on hand in the inevitable case that someone knocks a piece of your costume off.

What is the cosplay scene at NYCC like?

The cosplay scene at NYCC is a bit thin but it is understandable given the overcrowding of the event however the quality is good and we all have a really god time together.
