Don't Leave: Fairlady Canceled At Issue Five

One of my favorite comics from this year (#5, if I'm counting) just got the axe. Writer Brian Schirmer announced Fairlady's cancellation with this week's final issue on Twitter:

Sad news, folks: Fairlady is canceled as of the forthcoming issue #5. Thread.

The book came out swinging back in April & #1 even got a 2nd printing. And while issue 2 had less of a sales drop than average, orders for 3-5 fell steadily, to a point where the series is no longer financially viable.

I can't expect the artists to work for free, nor should Image be expected to carry us at a loss.

The timing is unfortunate & beyond our control. Just this past week, @ComicBook named Fairlady one of the year's best books so far. It was also the week where we received the fatal news. As a result, we were encouraged to raise the price of the upcoming trade to $16.99.

While $9.99 would be more friendly to readers & retailers, it's a price typically used only for 1st volumes of an ongoing series. As there won't be a Vol. 2, we agreed to the price change.

.@Claudia_Balboni, @marissadraws, & I thank all of our readers for your love & support. I personally delighted in meeting so many of you over the past few months. And to all the stores who stood tall for us, a mighty THANK YOU to you as well.

One more round of gratitude to all of the artists who supplied us with amazing covers. I'm still floored by the talent who showed up.

I hope to one day return to this crazy fantasy world. I hope to write more tales of the land's only Fairlady & her big, sexy cat man. I hope that we made even a tiny impact on some readers along the way. I hope.

I'm bummed. I think Fairlady was something special in terms of how a comic was structured: Single issue stories each issue in a fantasy setting. In a market saturated with five and six issue arcs, I hoped Fairlady's focus on a story that began and ended in the space of the issue a reader held in their hands would help it survive and even thrive. It didn't.  I liked the characters, and I liked the stories. It's a shame the market didn't agree.

END OF STORY ARC! Jenner is forced to team up with a Fairman in an attempt to save the life of a woman tied to a past investigation. No one likes loose ends, but some cases are never truly closed… Will this one be Jenner's last?
