Dreaming Of Impossible Things In Descender #3

Descender_3_cover-650x992Descender is unlike any other comic I've read before. Maybe you could argue that there have been similar titles if you're a sci-fi expert, but for me, this book is a cut above the rest. From Image Comics, Descender #3, written by Jeff Lemire, with art by Dustin Nguyen continues the tale of Tim-21 and Dr. Quon, showing us just how memorable their relationship was. When the issue begins, we are with Tim-21 as he goes through a total system failure. Suddenly, he is dreaming a dream that seems very realistic. Then, he is no longer alone. He is joined by ERAZ-435, who claims that he's been waiting for him. The key detail that is mentioned is when the robot introduces himself he says he "was" ERAZ-435, but the humans fought back. Now, even though it's later confirmed in the issue that he was dreaming, it is important information to remember.

What's happening in real time is Driller is attempting to save Tim-21. However, when he encounters humans, an explosive battle takes place. Dustin Nguyen's art style really shines in these scenes. The watercolor look is truly exquisite, even when explosions are happening. Jeff Lemire's script continues to provide us with a pleasant balance of background information, suspense, and character development. It's clear that he's building up the plot to bring us to a big event, at least we can assume so because of Tim-21's foreshadowing dream. That's how I interpreted it the instance anyway. If he's not technically supposed to dream as a robot, and he is, perhaps it's something more.

In the end, that's what I appreciate most about really well put together comics. I like an interactive script that keeps me guessing, but also provides me with enough background that I don't feel clueless. Descender is a truly remarkable book. I dare you to pick it up and not be addicted.
