Faith #8 Touches On Today's Issues With Subtlety And Cynacism

Valiant's series Faith has been great for more than just being a strong female role model that doesn't conform to the unrealistic comic book standards. The series has been able to touch upon topics that effect a lot of people on an everyday basis. With this eight issue by Jody Houser, Joe Eisma and Margurite Sauvage, the story of Faith Herbert touches on her guilt for being alive while those she loved have sacrificed themselves and/or died. Death can affect people in different ways, and for some people the expectation that they must do something good with their life to justify still being here can be strong. Faith's villain The Vine knows enough about her to use that as a weapon. Using tiny holographic projectors to make Faith believe the ghosts of her parents, her double and her friend Flamingo have come back and they are disappointed in her.

Faith isn't sure any of this is real, so she calls in the most cynical person she knows… not sure how that was supposed to help. But Paige is also very honest and talks about how she hates people but Faith still sees the best in them. Paige says a line that may be spot on for what's going on in the world right now: "I've always found people to be selfish and stupid. Especially large groups of people. Hurting anyone different because they're scared. Or else they have a complete lack of empathy. Most people just don't care." That's a pretty spot on commentary for the world.

Overall the issue is about Faith renewing her commitment to making a difference with her life and being more than just another person. To be someone who still believes that things can change for the better and keeps trying to make it happen.

Faith #8 goes on sale Wednesday.
