Gilbert Shelton's New Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Suicide Bombing For Their For Fiftieth Anniversary
The longest standing graphic novel publishers in the UK, Knockabout Comics, have a new book to celebrate with at the end of October, and it's a real beauty of comic book aficionados. Fifty Freakin' Years Of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers by Gilbert Shelton, celebrating fifty years of Freak Brothers comic books, including brand new strips by Shelton. A celebrated member of the alternative comic book scene of the sixties and seventies, the musical druggy social satirical comic strip Freak Brothers has lasted longer than any of them and deserves the respect for doing so. And to get new strips from Shelton that look as fresh – if not fresher – as the day the strips were first published is just a cherry on the top.
If you don't want to pick this comic book up, then I am doubtful that you even like comic books.
The book will contain several brand new Freak Brothers stories, along with a 6,000-word history/autobiography/anecdote fest by Gilbert Shelton, along with illustrations, photos and parody strips.
And because we are Bleeding Cool, we have a few page from one of the new strips, an 8 page Phineas story called "Phineas becomes a Suicide Bomber", there are also new 8 page stories of Freewheelin' Franklin, "Franklin got his Gun", Fat Freddy "Fat Freddy gets Religion" and a couple of other shorter Freak Brothers ones too.
There's also a gallery of Freak Brothers parody strips by Robert Crumb, Hunt Emerson and more.
Strap in. Be ready to perform a Quirkafleeg at any moment. And yes, why not, let's start with suicide bombing, with Phineas strapped in with explosives ready to blow his drug-addled body sky-high – higher than he's ever been before!
What the other folk have said,
"Gilbert Shelton is as near as comics have come to pro-ducing a natural comedic genius." – Alan Moore
"Wonderful, wonderful stuff. The Freak Brothers define all that is good and funny in underground comics, able to simultaneously criticise society and laugh at the counter culture." – The Alien Online
