Image Comics to Publish Sci-Fi 'Stairway' Anthology Comic
Two years ago, Top Cow published an original graphic novel through Image Comics called Stairway. Tagged as a volume 1, it was written by Matt Hawkins and drawn by Raffaele Ienco. Stairway was about a postgraduate student who discovers a way to unlock information hidden deep in our "junk DNA," parts of bio-schematics and other pieces of baffling data are found. This discovery triggers the largest scientific initiative since the Manhattan Projects, with teams of scientists working to collect and collate this information. The comic asked if they would find a stairway to heaven, or unleash something that would kill us all. The 'clunk, clunk, aargh, there are some things man is not meant to know' school. It was promoted as a cross between Matt's own Think Tank and Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson's Transmetropolitan.
There was no second volume. But two years later, there may be something else. Image Comics will be publishing Stairway Anthology. Named creators include Stairway's Raffaele Ienco but also writers Simon Birks, Carlos Griffoni, Joseph A. Michael and Mark Schmidt, and artist Alberto Jiménez Alburquerque, Andrea Mutti, Atilio Rojo and Donny Tran. Presumably, Matt Hawkins will be in there somewhere.
Genetic manipulation, paradox, alternative histories and much more are included in this 128 page anthology of hard science fiction and genre stories! From some of the best up-in-coming talent in comics comes a mind bending look at what makes us human.
Sci-fi anthologies have never been the easier sell in the recent American comic book market, but they do well elsewhere and much of American and British sci-fi began in the sci-fi pulps, from Asimov to Heinlein to Harrison. Could this be the opportunity to create a similar force for comic books almost a century later? It as to work again sometime, right? Here's a look at the cover, though it may well change before solicitation and publication.
