Whatever Happened To… The Islander Comics Exclusive Cover of Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad?

Back in January last year, Bleeding Cool ran a story about the exclusive variant cover of Justice League Vs Suicide Squad #1 that an employee of Islander Comics of Merritt Island, Florida commissioned for his own online business, but without getting approval for, and landing the store with the bill.

The exclusive cover by Paolo Pantalena, was sold as an exclusive retailer variant by the employee's online store Transitive Comics instead, in three variants. 3,000 in colour, 1,500 in a recoloured negative version and 1000 in a colour version without the logos,  a "Virgin" edition. None of these were sold and even though Islander Comics was getting orders for copies, as DC Comics had promoted the availability of the cover, DC Comics told them to send all the copies back.

Which appears to have happened, there have not been any open sales of comics that sneaked out that I can find on-line. It would b quite a rare variant if you could find a copy.

But waste not, want not, it appears DC Comics recycled the comic in question for their Local Comic Shop Day exclusive cover, currently going for 99 cents on eBay…

And with the same print run as the Transitive Comics/Islander Comics version boasted of.

Print Run is 3,000 units.

The debut issue of the smash-hit miniseries that rocked comics shops in December is back in a special edition with a variant cover by Paulo
Pantalena, available only to LCS Day participating stores only! The first major event storyline of DC¹s Rebirth era begins with a day Amanda Waller always knew would come: the Justice League discovers the existence of the Suicide Squad! This government-sponsored black-ops team of super-villains with bombs implanted in their brains is obviously a deal-breaker for Earth¹s paragons of truth and justice! But you can bet that the Wall and her Task Force X won¹t go down without the fight to end all fights.

Now all we have to ask – is what happened to the knocked back colours and virgin cover editions? Hmm?
