Judge Dredd Vs Zombies: The Game
It got rather overshadowed the other day in terms of new App games, what with the iPad release of A Bard's Tale. But Rebellion, the games company that bought 2000AD and Judge Dredd because they liked them, released a new Judge Dredd game at the 99 cent/69 pence price point. Judge Dredd Vs Zombies.
In the game, Dredd has to take down hordes of zombified citizens of Mega City One with his Lawgiver, or a weapon of his choice, collect shields and blow up fatties. All jolly japes.
It does rather conflict a little with the central concept of Dredd-As-Bag-Guy, these zombies are already dead, killing them brings with it little internal conflict, and the central satire at the heart of Dredd, a very moral fascist, is lost completely.
But it does tickle the primal lobes rather nicely. The impact of the guns feels real, as does their science fictiony use. Dredd looks great, a slimline version here, as he leaps through the blocks he needs to clear, guns blazing, only for the undead to swarm you. It's hard, you only have so many bullets, there's a lot of making judgements of how to take many out with one shot, rather thangoing in all Lawgivers blazing.
It's not as funny as it should be for a Judge Dredd game, sadly, especially when compared to A Bard's Tale. We could have had a big zombie singalong here too. But it's a fun challenge… and it's only a dollar. What's not to love?
Judge Dredd Vs Zombies can be downloaded from the Apple App Store.
