Mike Wellman: Psychic Retailer

Mike Wellman, owner of the Comic Bug store in Manhattan Beach as well as a comic writer on Guns A Blazin!, is pretty well known in the industry. But did you know he was psychic? Yes, I said psychic not psychotic… the two are different. Mike shared a story on social media of a mother and father coming into his shop looking for gifts for their 28-year old son but not being sure what he wanted. They asked Mike for some suggestions… but he can tell the story better:

Just had the most bizarre yet awesome comic retailing experience in my life!

A mom and dad were shopping for a birthday present for their 28 year old son. She said she thought he wanted Tales from the Crypt comics but wasn't sure and couldn't find the message with his birthday list. She texted him to ask again but after 5 minutes of him not responding, asked me for advice on some good graphic novels. I recommended Locke & Key (because it's the best horror comic and we don't have Tales from the Crypt currently), Tom King's Batman Rebirth GN and Black Science Vol. 1 cuz Rick Remender is awesome!

I told them that if he had any of these or didn't want them, they could return for a full refund or exchange. As they were leaving the shop, her son texted her back his birthday wishlist.

She said "He wants Locke & Key, Batman Rebirth and something new and cool from Image Comics" forgetting that I just sold her that exact thing. I told her to take a look in her bag and see if those books fit the bill. Needless to say, we all thought it was a quite cosmic and eerie in a good way!

Now that's customer service. I'm hoping a bunch of folks swing by his shop and put him to the test. Mike is the one on the right in the photo standing with artist Rafael Navarro.
