I had the opportunity this last weekend to walk the Long Beach Comic & Horror Con. The past 3 years I have attended as a budding young (well old) artist and enjoyed my time in the Artist Alley. From the veteran creators of the comic industry to the new faces looking to tell their own stories, there is an overall drive of creativity, energy and passion for the comic medium. The diversity of styles, content, ages and viewpoints just show how much people love comics. I took this time walking the isle of the Artist Alley to interview a wide range of creators, all of whom are very driven, thoughtful and extremely passionate.

I'm a creative who likes to build, draw, write, think, record, and paint (and probably other things too). I produce two independent comics series: Dark Mouse and 140. Dark Mouse involves a self-destructive mouse with a drinking problem. 140 is a creative experiment where all the text in the book is taken from tweets and the art is inspired by those tweets.

What is your favorite and least favorite thing about being a comic creator?

Creating comics, or any other artwork, is a catharsis and is genuinely fun for me. I'm not sure what my least favorite thing is. I honestly go back and try to learn from any low points or mistakes I've made. Most of these are on the commercial side: don't order too many of this or that product, remember to have fun making the art.

How long did your first project take to complete?

If we're talking products I sell at comic book conventions, my first standard-sized comic book took roughly three months to complete. I don't make every comic the same way though. I paint some stories and others I scribble quickly with pencil. The process for anything I work on varies quite a bit.

What does success mean to you in regards to creating comics?

Follow through. Being able to complete a comic book with drawings and words. Like most things, it's actual work and is very time consuming.

What should people expect from your work?

Hopefully good stories and that are nice to look at. I write stories that I enjoy and maybe other people will too. Again, lots of mice and lots of booze.
