Harlan Ellison's Repent, Harlequin! Said The Ticktock Man Headed For The Big Screen

repent Science fiction writer Harlan Ellison has given permission to filmmakers to adapt his award-winning short story Repent, Harlequin! Said The Ticktock Man for the big screen, according to Deadline.

World War Z and Thor's J. Michael Straczynski had to adapt the script first and deliver it to Ellison before the author agreed to grant him the rights to bring his story to the big screen.

First published in 1965, Repent won the 1966 Hugo Award and the 1965 Nebula Award, and is a satirical take on a dystopian society that puts way too much emphasis on regulating time – if you're late, it's not just annoying, it's a crime.

It's also significant for its nonlinear structure without the use of flashbacks, so it'll be interesting to see how that translates on screen. The protagonist is Everett C. Marm, who rebels against the system with the knowledge that the Ticktockman could stop his heart in an instant if he's found out.

Straczynski, armed with finished script, will now reach out to filmmaking partners. Deadline says his first choices for director are Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro. Well, naturally.
