Mass Effect 4 Will Have Some Kind Of Online Component

mass-effect-3-the-real-female-shepardMass Effect is a not really known for its online functionality. Most people are busy enough with the hour stealing solo campaign. Of course, Mass Effect 3 had that better than expected multiplayer mode, but I'd be surprised if it was the real selling point for most people.

In that vein, it looks like Mass Effect 4 will have some kind of online component to it at least. Via IGN, Bioware's Senior Development Director Chris Wynn took to twitter to find a new producer of online content.

Of course, the fact the game is going to have online functionality is a given at this point. The question really becomes how intensive will it be though? Will it be a factor in the story or will it just be multiplayer matches? We just don't have enough context yet.

It's of my opinion that the story campaign will have an online component though. I'm not sure how it will come around, but so many AAA video games now are supporting some kind of persistent connectivity. Maybe some kind of faction war, connected hubs or something of that ilk.

I don't even think that would be inherently bad either. There could be some potential to that connectivity and that's coming from someone who ranks the Mass Effect franchise as my favorite solo experience in gaming. Now do I trust publisher EA to stay true to a smart concept and not abuse that connectivity? I'm a little less optimistic about that.
