Peter Cannon's Thunderbolt Can See You (#2 Spoilers)
In his mailing list, Kieron Gillen calls today's Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #2 drawn by Caspar Wijngaard from Dynamite…
"The Morrison issue" as shorthand when really "the Kieron Gillen issue." There's emotional stuff, but this issue cackles, and has some pure Young Avengers approach buried in the mix. I am now my own biggest influence. The end is nigh.'
Gotta love a self-swipe. Which sounds like something that may still be illegal in a number of less-progressive states.
Gillen is well-regarded as a bit of a formalist. He loves his nine-panel grid and what you can do with it. And will go on and on about it in pubs, on stages and on dancefloors. Such as in today's The Wicked + The Divine, where he and Jamie appears to be using its metronomic way of spacing out time and space as the author dictates, dragging your eye along with short sharp bursts rather than letting you set your own pace.
You're a slave to the rhythm. In Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt, Kieron did all that last month. This month he keeps that grid and takes it for a ride. As a way to cross the dimensions by mirroring the structure in which they exist as comic book characters – without ever having a character recognise the meta-narrative…
So not only is this an unauthorised sequel to Watchmen, it's also an unauthorised remake of Doomsday Clock. Which is all for the good. And the references tumble throughout the second issue, as much as they did the first, a kind of Where's Waldo Man?
But as a nod to the origins as a Grant Morrison issue, we get this very obvious reference…
…to a certain Animal Man scene drawn by Chas Truog.
Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo recently did similar to welcome Grant Morrison to the Metal event…
Though there's a direct line back to Bryan Talbot's Brainstorm in the seventies for that memorable moment.
That's Chester Williams, a character who would later appear in Alan Moore, Rick Veitch and Steve Bissette's Swamp Thing.
I hear the Eddie Campbell issue of Peter Cannon Thunderbolt is coming soon…
