South Africa's President Sues Over Rape Cartoon

It was published two years ago by the South African Sunday Times. A cartoon, by legendary South African satirist Zapiro, of President Zuma preparing to rape the justice system while other bodies hold the blinded, desparate justice system down.

Zuma is depicted by Zapiro with a shower over his head, symbolic of an unsuccessful rape accusation against Zuma. The trial for which reported that Zuma, famed for numerous wives and affairs, showered after sex to prevent him getting HIV. Subsequently the cartoonist has used the shower to show how Zuma gets rid of other accusations against him.

Althouigh there have been many threats to the cartoonist and the paper over this specific cartoon, it was only yesterday when they became real and the paper and cartoonist were sued for five million rand for defamation.

This may take some time to cauight and seems to have taken people by surprise. Previous press complaint findings were in the favour of the paper and cartoonist, emphasising free speech and the valuable debate the catoon generated.
