I continue to be confused by the marketing of YA franchise hopeful Divergent. Thus far, it's focused heavily on the tattoos the various characters sport, and now, with the very first clip released from the film, tattoos are given the utmost focus once again.
Shailene Woodley Tris asks to see Theo James' Four's tattoos, and it naturally ends in a kiss. And there's some very melodramatic music to match the unabashedly romantic scene. It's a pretty pivotal scene from the story, but also a very strange one to use for a first clip. Certainly not a clip that will draw in the broadest audience possible. I don't get it, but maybe the marketing professionals know something I don't.
Divergent is bullish on its prospects and has already dated two subsequent sequels, but the first film will have to do well first, when it's released on March 21, 2014.
