"Twilight For Boys" – The New Scott Pilgrim Review Meme
Visual from rottentomatoes.
The Twilight comparison isn't one I'm using just to tie in to the flavor of the month(year?); it's a pretty apt assessment. Twilight succeeded because it put a relatable character in a miraculous situation and gave them a love interest that exceeded their possible expectations. It was aspirational. Scott Pilgrim is the same.
It's Twilight for boys. It's male adolescent sexual angst as "an epic of epic epicness," as the poster tagline informs us… and as the movie matches in attitude and action. It's the indulgence of everything a not-quite-adult, no-longer-a-kid manchild could want from women, in a package designed to appeal to not-quite-adult, no-longer-a-kid manchildren who would happily see their lives in the metaphors of the comic books, sitcoms, and videogames they were weaned on.
In many ways, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is the equivalent of the Twilight Saga for boys. It is deeply rooted in pubescent romantic fantasy, albeit this time from the male's point of view. It is foolish and shallow about the ways of relationships, pandering to the basest instincts of the target audience.
Make no mistake about it, there is definitely a formula at work here. I've heard it said that Scott Pilgrim is Twilight for teenage guys, with a few appropriate swaps put in place.
