Secrets Of The New Marvel Universe, And The Universes That Came Before

Well recently, we looked at the revelation that the omniverse had been through a cosmic refresh, one that had created the eighth iteration of reality.

Writer Al Ewing spoke more of what that meant.

At the moment, I'm more interested in the idea that Iso-8 is a "cosmic counter," showing that this is the 8th iteration of the Marvel Omniverse. While the Marvel Universe—singular—has been restarted more than once, that doesn't count, since other universes rolled right along. This is all building on established continuity: if the "old" Marvel U was the 7th Universe, Galactus was originally born in the 6th Universe, a place of pure Kirby science. New villain Moridun is the last survivor of the 5th Universe, a universe of dark magic. And I've got a rough idea of the other universes, but we're getting into very long-term thinking now…

Basically Ewing is completely rewriting the structure of Marvel universe reality from within his comics. And everyone else is going to have to play along.

It also means that items of extreme cosmic power are easier to create than ever before. That might mean going the video-game route of power enhancement through Iso-8, but that's fairly basic; if I were in the Marvel Universe, I'd be more worried about new cosmic cubes or the Iso-Sphere being fought over in Battlerealm.

Cosmic cubes being used by SHIELD over in Captain America? And something with them setting up the big Marvel event Assault On Pleasant Hill, which has all sorts of Waco and Ruby Ridge-style connotations?

Something that the cast of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl should consider….

Yes, okay it's time travel. But you didn't even consider the cosmic cube reality changing of SHIELD? Especially since Squirrel Girl seems to be rather valuable in New Avengers.

But back to those iterations of universes. We meet our sorcerer from the fifth reality who has survived the destruction and recreation of three of them so far in today's New Avengers.

Moridun, the Ghost Wizard Of The Fifth Cosmos. And reminiscent, shall we say of the Old Ones? Is he bringing some friends?
