Superman's Editors Again Fail To Remove His Underwear
Recently we noticed that between preview….
… and publication….
…C comics managed to edit out the red trunks from the Superman image on a newspaper front page.
Superman's classic red trunks, his underwear on top of his trousers as some see it as, were originally modelled on the shorts worn over tights in wrestling exhibition matches in the nineteen thirties. And, since the costume redesign in 2011 that removed them, they have become totemic to some. A shibboleth for nostalgia, something that if restored would make all things right with the world. And from DC's perspective, they are a break with the past, a chance to prove that they can do something new, be something new. They aren't coming back – outside of the upcoming Band Aid project, that is.
But some folk don't realise this. They forget. Like the preview above. And like Superman/Wonder Woman #10 this week, in which Superman has been infected by Doomsday. And not only has he increased in mass and sprouted bone growth around his body and face… but his trunks grew back again.
And they don't even get burnt off.
Although somehow by the end of the comic… they have gone, as quickly as they appeared.
And all is, again, right with the world…
