The Opening Ceremony And Walking Around Flame Con 2 (VIDEO)
by Ray Flook & Alejandra Bodden
Following-up on the success of last year's inaugural event and continuing their commitment to (in their own words) "making the fan community more fun, inclusive and safe for geeks who are queer," Geeks Out presented Flame Con 2 on August 20th & 21st at the Marriott Hotel-Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. Expanded to two days this year to accommodate increased interest from creators, exhibitors and fans, Flame Con 2 celebrated the diversity and creativity of contributions made to pop culture by the LGBTQ community though panel discussions, screenings, readings/performances, cosplay education/competition and much more. Special guests this year included writers and artists Phil Jimenez (Superwoman), Steve Orlando (Midnighter), Kate Leth (Hellcat), Greg Pak (Totally Awesome Hulk) and Sophie Campbell (Jem and The Holograms); pop culture personalities Cecil Baldwin (Welcome To Night Vale) and Matthew Waterhouse (Doctor Who); cosplay stars Jay Justice and Tea Berry-Blue; and over 150 exhibitors, offering everything from prints and t-shirts to custom toys and special effects make-up. Panels included a wide variety of topics from self-publishing and effective fanfic writing to geek activism and the importance of networking within the LGBTQ community; and a full Saturday's worth of programming wrapped-up with a cosplay contest and a performance from the Kweendom Comedy Hour.
Now here's what it was like from the floor level…
