Will DC Introduce a Justice Gang Instead of a Justice League in 2024?
DC Comics has been doing without a Justice League for a couple of years now. But might we now have a Justice Gang for 2024?
Article Summary
- DC might replace Justice League with Justice Gang in 2024, featuring unconventional heroes.
- Justice League's absence leaves room for Amanda Waller's increased anti-hero policies.
- Justice Society and Legion of Super Heroes plans disrupted by Geoff Johns' Image move.
- Justice Gang concept reminiscent of villain groups, hints at street-level superhero adventures.
DC Comics has been doing without a Justice League for a couple of years now. Their deaths in Justice League #75 set up Dark Crisis and the rise of Titans. And even though the deaths were swiftly reversed, the League was not reformed.
DC teased that they would be bringing back a new Justice League at the end of last year, but it didn't happen. Indeed, in the comics, Amanda Waller has been using the lack of a Justice League to persuade President Joe Biden to give her more and more anti-superhero powers. So that she can do some very bad things.
There were also plans for the Justice Society Of America to be reformed, as well as a new Legion Of Super Heroes series spinning out of Geoff Johns and Mikel Janin's JSA 12-issue series, but John's decision to go exclusive with Ghost Machine at Image Comics changed those plans at DC.
But what I have been hearing in recent months from DC sources is that, rather than the inevitable return of the Justice League in some form or other, possibly opposed to Amanda Waller, we may be getting a similar, scrappier team, with a similar, scrappier name, but not the usual members. Specifically named the Justice Gang.
A name that echoes the Injustice Gang super-villain teams first formed by Libra, including Chronos, Mirror Master, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Shadow Thief and the Tattooed Man, while Lex Luthor had his own version using Circe, Doctor Light, Jemm, the Joker, Mirror Master and Ocean Master as counterparts to the League.
Expect the likes of Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Metamorpho, Ultraman and Hawkgirl, somewhere between the Justice League Detroit era and the Justice League International team of the eighties. A more street-level team rather than one concerned with cosmic threats.
Obviously, it will eventually lead to a fully fledged, fully formed Justice League, with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the like again. And we also have the non-canon Justice League Vs Godzilla Vs King Kong and the like. But as it stands, DC Comics may be playing around with the idea in different ways first.
