Star Citizen Asks For More Money In The Most Ridiculous Way

Cloud Imperium Games, who has already received millions of dollars for Star Citizen, is now asking for more money with a ludicrous pack.

Article Summary

  • Star Citizen's decade-long dev cycle presses on with a new $48,000 bundle.
  • Cloud Imperium Games offers the Legatus 2953 pack with 175 ships.
  • Despite millions in crowdfunding, a full game release remains elusive.
  • This isn't the first big ask; a $28,000 pack was sold in 2018.

We've never been shy about criticizing Cloud Imperium Games about the status of Star Citizen, but their latest stunt for money feels unprecedented. For over a decade, the game has been in constant development, with the team releasing Alpha after Alpha in updates as they expand the universe. During that time, they have received millions of dollars in private crowdfunding to make the game possible. But in that ENTIRE time, they have never fully released the game, or even given the slightest hint of a release date. Bigger games have been announced, developed, released, and seen a sunset in the time Star Citizen has been in development. You would think at this point, the team would have enough money, ideas, and a roadmap to put the game out in full and just call these Alpha additions just proper updates. But instead, the company has been making content and continually asking for money. Well, now they're asking for more, and it's in the form of a content pack that you'd have to sell a car to purchase.

This week, the team revealed the Legatus 2953 bundle, which is every single ship ever released in the history of the game in one pack. 175 vessels in total, plus some additional content to be released in Q1 2024, all available for you to add to your account. How much does this cost? $48,000! That's not a typo, we didn't misplace the comma; this company expects you to pay them $48K to own the entire pack. What's more, there's a prerequisite that you must have spent at least $10k on the game already. So it's not like anyone can get it on it, it's only really available to those who have already given them a ton of cash.

Now, if you have the money, and this is what you really want in life, then by all means, do what you feel like. If you're the average gamer, however, who has been strung along for a decade and has yet to receive the full version of the game, you're probably thinking to yourself, "What the hell?!?" It's not the first time they've done this either; as PC Gamer pointed out, in 2018, they changed $28K for a different pack of the same nature. It really makes you wonder what all of the money is going to and what kind of game you are really paying for at this point.

If this is your thing, do as you wish. But to us, we say keep the $48K. It ain't worth it for something that technically isn't finished, and at this rate, never will be.
