After the internet criticized some of the visibility options that have been put into a recent Tekken 8 demo, the game's director chose to respond to them. In case you haven't played the demo, Bandai Namco is offering up a plethora of options for those who may be disabled in different ways, giving those players the ability to still play the game, even if they can't experience everything about it. One of the visual options has been getting criticism online over the holiday week, as you can see here in the image and video below, as it takes two of the fighters and and gives them horizontal and vertical black-and-white stripes to identify the two.
When this was posted, it immediately got tons of negative feedback, as it was causing people to have all sorts of reactions, from watery eyes all the way to motion sickness. People have been telling the developers on social media that they need to remove the filter, citing it may cause people to seek medical care just looking at it, and that it needs a rework. (WARNING: If you watch the video below, please keep in mind it was designed for people with a specific visual impairment. Viewing discretion is advised!)
This prompted the game's director, Katsuhiro Harada, to address the criticism on Twitter/X by letting fans know they literally aren't looking at the entire picture.
A few people, albeit very few, have either misunderstood the accessibility options we are trying, or have only seen the video without actually trying them out in the demo play.
We have "multiple types of color vision options" for players with different color vision, not just one pattern. In addition to that, there is also a brightness adjustment for effects, and an overall brightness adjustment, and with those, there is quite a range of adjustment. On top of that, we have never claimed or publicized that these options cover all players' color vision (although it has been talked about by a favorable community as a result).
These color vision options are a rare part of the fighting game genre, but they are still being researched and we intend to expand on them in the future. Currently, we have received positive feedback from many demo play participants, but we understand that this option does NOT address the color vision of ALL players in the world (said again). We would also like to inform you that we have been working with several research institutes and communities to develop this option even before we developed the "accessibility version of TEKKEN7 (not for sale)" and #TEKKEN8.
Overall, it should be taken into consideration by ANY player that when you go to the accessibility options for any game, you are looking through options that have been tailored to help people who need it, and not every option is for you. If you have normal vision, more than likely, you're not going to play the game like this on a regular basis. What's more, this is a demo, not the final version of the game, which isn't due out until later this month. There's always a chance that it's not perfected/complete to what needs to be added.
