GDC is Introducing Main Stage Presentations for the First Time This Year
This year, the Game Developers Conference (GDC) will introduce a series of marquee presentations on the opening day of the main conference called the GDC Main Stage. The multi-speaker presentation will invite attendees to gain inspiration and insight into creative challenges and opportunities in game development. It is GDC's intent that the Main Stage presentations will become a lasting part of GDC conferences in the future.
The inagural presentation is being called "The Developer's Journey" and will take place at the Moscone Center's West Hall on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.
"The Developer's Journey" will focus on how to find inspiration over the course of a game's development cycle from early conception through development, as well as how to deal with the fallout from release and post-release content. The presentation will open with a special musical performance generated in Media Molecule's upcoming creative game, Dreams. Siobhan Reddy from Media Molecule will then explain how Dreams can unlock players' creativity in user-generated detail.
Hello Games' Sean Murray will then pick up the mic to discuss how his small team created one of the most ambitious games of 2016 with No Man's Sky. He'll then detail how Hello Games built to record player numbers by 2019 despite the early negativity that greeted the game's release. The disucssion is intended to be candid and open in order to focus on the power of what developers do, rather than what they say, when faced with that kind of audience adversity.
The final segment of the talk will be held by veteran game dev Laralyn McWilliams as she discusses how her teams have found resolve and inspiration in stressful environments. She'll share how she maintains an optimistic outlook on development, as well as share some new tools and techniques for dealing with unforseen challenges.
"The first GDC took place at Chris Crawford's home with a small group of game developers exchanging their best advice on how to make games better. We wanted to reflect that same spirit of connection and community that's at the heart of GDC by making the Main Stage a place for all attendees to learn together," said Katie Stern, general manager of the Game Developers Conference. "Development can be as rewarding as it is challenging, and one of our goals is to inspire the community to find better ways forward. We're honored to have Siobhan, Sean and Laralyn to light the way."
The Main Stage presentation will be open to all GDC Conference and Expo+ pass holders, and will be livestreamed via GDC's Twitch channel starting at 12:30pm PT on Wednesday, March 20th.
